Today, there is so much negativity in the air surrounding the recession, it’s actually amazing that entrepreneurs find the fortitude to forge ahead strong – in the face of uncertainty and struggle.  Entrepreneurs by nature are risk takers and seem to come alive when presented with great challenges. These economic times test our metal.

Whether you have just gotten your pink slip, lost your biggest contract, or fallen victim to the prime lending fiasco and are facing foreclosure, there is hope.  This is the time to pull out all of the stops that sets the true entrepreneur apart from others.  Why, because we know how to innovate, focus, rebound, rebuild and reinvent in times of economic uncertainty. This is part-one of a three-part article on what we should be doing right now to remain strong during at such a time as this.

  1. Revamp Your Mindset.

You must Know Why You Do What You Do!  If you are in business only  to make money you are likely to be disappointed.  You must connect to a deeper purpose that drives you to succeed.  Your gifts and contributions to the world go far beyond your self  and focuses on solving the problems of others.  It is an intrinsic knowing that what you offer really makes a difference. When you are motivated by helping others, your value will be recognized and create a demand for your services.

2.  Enlarge Your Circle.

You must think and act outside the box. This is a new decade, a new world,  and you are a part of it.  Refuse to isolate yourself and make a point of networking with people in your profession on a weekly basis. Network with smart people who share your drive and interests.   Read and Keep up with industry  social, economic, technical, and geo-political trends so that you are fresh in your ideas, strategies and practices. Connect to other communities (on-line and offline), mastermind groups  and stay current. Business is no place for the ‘Lone Ranger’- stay connected!

3.  Maintain High Visibility.

Out of touch is out of mind. When times get  tough,  there is a tendency to drop out – which is just the opposite of what you need to do.  While others are pulling back and retrenching, this is the time for you to pop out of the crowd.  This is the time to be Present and to get noticed.  When the dust settles, your customers and other publics will remember those that maintained high visibility and consistency in the marketplace. Everybody wants to be associated with a winner!

Identify community based groups that need your expertise and begin sharing your talents on a volunteer basis and they will discover your unique gifts and be anxious to publicize and refer your services to others. Offering to plan a fundraiser or to emcee a program will garner exposure for you that you can’t  pay for but will give you instant recognition and  credibility to your brand.   A pied piper is a valued asset.

The next article will discuss Getting Clarity About What You Want and Attracting Your Target  Market,

……“Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who am I not to be? I am a child of God. My playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around me. I am meant to shine, as children do. I was born to make manifest the glory of God. That is within me. It’s not just in me; it’s in everyone.
And as I let my own light shine, I unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As I am liberated from my own fear, my presence automatically liberates others.”
– - – - – - – - – - Author unknown

In March, I traveled to San Francisco California with a business partner to attend a “Building Sponsorships Conference”. The conference experience was great! As I returned home and began reflecting on the week, I realized it was worth far more than the technical aspects and content of the sessions, it helped me re-discover myself and who I really am.

Several years ago, I made a decision to relocate to a small East Texas town. We purchased a small mediteranean home that anyone would love. Over time I began to shrink and play small just so that I didn’t overshadow others. But this runs counter to my true personality. I am multi-talented, naturally outgoing, and love being active and meeting and communicating with others.

From the very first day in San Francisco, I was approached several times by perfect strangers who wanted to engage me and to learn more about me and spoke of my energy, my voice, and the aura that I exuded.

The week long experience in San Francisco, with other creative entrepreneurs was a good barometer for me because the contrast helped me to realize that I had learned to hide myself pretty well in this small community.

My take-a-way from the experience is that you cannot hide your “essence”. It is you! You may choose to kill it or suppress it, but it is what makes you unique. Thus, I will shine! I will not play small so that others can fill more secure. I will be my authentic self, no matter where I am and who I am with! I will not allow others to throw a blanket over my brilliance because I am a child of the King of the most High who expects each of us to be a light in a dark world. Nothing more and nothing less.

Are you liberated yet to just be you? This is what people really need to see! Just focus on getting your gift to the world!

Over the course of our lives we may “Do” many things in an effort to find fulfillment. That search often-times takes us to many lands searching for that right fit. A fit that resonates with your heart and soul.

Think about it, depending on where you are in life, you have probably worked on at least a dozen different jobs and might have lived in several different cities, and after a while, for one reason or the other, you simply moved on!

At the end of February, I conducted my first bus tour in five years. I escorted a group of African American’s from Nacogdoches, TX to Natchez Mississippi and it was Heaven! It reminded me of how much I truly love travel. It broadens ones understanding of other cultures and just how much we have in common, no matter what the differences might be. There is a shared human experience.

After a thrilling tour of several antebellum homes and reviewing the past struggle of African American’s as slaves forced into servitude for generations and their resilience to survive unspeakable and inhumane conditions, I am reminded that I can do anything but fail!

I returned to my life and my business energized and determined to go forward with my purpose and calling, no matter what!

From the struggle to put this trip together and the great reward and joy that I experienced, I gained some new perspective about my purpose. I realized that although I have chosen a different path for my life’s pursuit as a writer and speaker that I must embrace and use the experiences of my past to inspire and educate others. The lesson is to never “Do” anything that does not have meaning to you. All of your choices about your business, life, career, and family must be rooted in the values that you hold close. It is important to never give one minute of your life to a business, profession, activity, or cause with the wrong motivation. If you “Do” what you do from peer pressure or to please others, you will grow to hate the “thing” and experience emptiness at the end of the road.

Invaribly, the pursuit of vanity, pleasure, fame or wealth will be a dead end.

Now I know that I can pursue travel because it aligns with a deeper intrinsic value – to educate and inspire others, which is my passion. I find that the quest ends, when you find yourself. The journey is worth taking if you understand that your passion and what you do are inextricably interwoven.

I hope you find some value in my sharing this post.

Everyone, God Bless. Next week, I travel to San Francisco, a manifestation of a long awaited dream.

Thinking of Haiti and Dr. M.L.King’s Birthday

Thoughts of the devastation of Haiti and Dr. Kings birthday this week, provoked questions in my mind about what kind of legacy I would leave if I were suddenly taken from this life in a moment – just as Dr. King and thousands of Haitians were this past week.

Although not pretty, these incidents underscore an eventuality that all of us will one day have to face. Because life is short and uncertain, it seems reasonable that we value every moment and live to the fullest each day. But what does that mean?

Thoughts about our legacy is a valid issue to ponder and act upon. While we scurry about each day focusing on making money, we should stop long enough to ask these important questions: Am I using my gifts to make a difference in the world? Are all of my entrepreneurial pursuits self serving or ‘other’ serving? How am I using my time right now? What do I really value and how much of my time is spent doing the things that I value? What dreams have I invested in and what is the cost/benefit of those dreams? What has my life been about up to now? Who have I helped? What have I done to live a life that my family would be proud of? Have I made my family my first priority? Have I loved enough?

If nothing else, these times should have inspired deep introspection and action in each of us. There is something about ‘Now’ that should drive you to action each day to make sure you focus your energy and time on those things that will have eternal significance. Think of it as a long-term investment.

So, instead of shrinking and playing it safe in your limited comfort zone – think of living your entrepreneurial lives to the fullest – as creative expressions of who God is in your life.

This is the time to let your light shine. This Is The Time To Be All You Can Be!

To live life full out, there are two final questions I would challenge you to ponder:

1. If you knew that you only had one day to live, how would you spend it? Go do it now and do it often.
2. Have you given your heart to God? Go do it now.

Well, as you can see, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. How about you?

What are you doing right now to drive yourself into the New Year? Are you spending the last days of the year analyzing what you’ve accomplished in 2009 and where you are going in 2010? Have you put all of the systems in place to work smarter and not harder next year. Have you hired a VA to give you the help you need to explode your business? If so, I want you to re-focus for a just a moment to consider this:

Focusing on all of the external issues is good and necessary, but I want to remind you to focus on the internal as well. Plan a ‘Mental Health Day” for yourself to unwind, re-think, and regroup. It is during our rest and quiet-times that we gain our spiritual focus and began to allow the unconscious mind to help us form creative solutions and visions for the future.

The pressures of business oftentimes negatively effects our state of emotional and social well being in such a way that we become less able to adapt to change, cope with adversity, and perform successfully in our personal and business life. That is why we need a ‘Mental Health Day’. We should plan to retreat often to do ‘nothing’ so that we bring ourselves back into alignment.

Thanksgiving week-end was just that kind of a time for me recently. I took a trip to the beach which did me a lot of good. I was able to clear my mind which is one of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face – lack of clarity and lack of focus.

If you are planning to play big in 2010 or to come back strong from a downturn in your business, then getting away from everything you do ordinarily, would be a great move.

Write me and tell what you do to get clarity and focus. I would love to hear your ideas.

Last week I got some bad news. The royalty check that I had been expecting from book sales from my new book “The Heart and Soul of Business: One Woman’s Journey” was still in the mail and would be dismally less than what I expected.

After months of book signings and self marketing of my book , I felt that the wind had been knocked out of my sail. We work so hard for validation and we certainly hope for the economic rewards to be commensurate with our labor. Well, my friends, it doesn’t always work out that way — at least immediately!

It was discouraging, but over the week-end I began to think about my purpose. I didn’t write the book purely for money. I wrote the book to empower other women who struggle to “rise” in their personal lives as well as solo-entrepreneurs who desire to impact the world. On Saturday evening I received an email from a young woman who had participated in one of my Breakthrough meetings for women who had just completed my book and recently attended a book signing. She wrote me to express how the book had impacted her life — so much so that she has returned to school full time to pursue a degree in Social Work.

The very next day, during our Sunday meet and greet, another young woman who has participated in one of my seminars in a housing complex, stepped up to hug me and asked, when are you going to present another seminar for the women out there? We really need you. Both of these incidences are just too much for coincidence.

This was a direct confirmation to me to stay the course and to not get too perturbed that the money has not yet caught up with the effort. I resolved to be grateful for the opportunity to just serve others. It was motivation for me to be persistent and consistent and to never give up because the reward is far precious than silver or gold. It is eternal.

Our lives become perpetual by what we deposit in others. Entrepreneurs, if you have begun a journey and you are sure of the vision God has placed in you. Keep on walking in that direction, don’t let distractions deter you from your goal. Never give up. Keep moving forward with your dreams.

If you will follow your passion, the money will come. God knows exactly what you need. Are you passionate about what you are doing? I’d love to hear your comments.

Part 1: Business: A Balancing Act for Entrepreneurs

Again, this week I fell apart. My mind said go, but my body said no. My mind said, “Oh no not again”. I mean this was not the first time I have thrown my back out from too much traveling, or suffered some negative physical reaction as a result of not maintaining my blood sugar. It’s the same old story – I get so intense about business, that I forget to take care of myself. I am so focused on trying to get all the details done that I loose touch with what is important. Look at me, the life and business coach, who can’t keep her priorities straight. God first, my health, family, church and other. I thought I had learned the lesson that if I don’t take of myself, I won’t be around to take care of my family or my business, so I must practice extreme self care. Stress is the culprit of most of our problems. We as entrepreneurs live under a crucible to produce and make money. The very notion conjures up long hours, sacrifice and yes, self denial. I mean most of us have got the “No Pain, No Gain” piece. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Following are a few suggestions for maintaining a more balanced business and personal life.
Know Exactly What You Want
Confusion about this matter leads to over activity on one hand and crippling anxiety on the other hand. The most important question to ask yourself is what is it that you truly want. Don’t get caught up in the hype and try to do what everybody is doing. When you are not sure about what you want you are easily influenced by others, trends and even hollywood. You will sometimes find your self chasing lights to nowhere and end up frustrated and defeated in your efforts. Pray and ask God to guide you into your purpose so you do not waste valuable time chasing someone else’s dream. God will make it clear to you what you should be doing with your life and what specific and unique gifts he has deposited in you for his glory. This revelation is life changing.
What is it that keeps you up at night? Is there a burning desire in your heart to do something different with your life? What is it? What is stopping you from going after it and achieving it?
Have Clear Goals and Timelines
Once you have set clear goals you can begin to focus on these. There is no substitute for a clear mind. Cut out anything that does not lead you to your goals. Put aside unprofitable and unrelated tasks. Superflous activity without true purpose is meaningless. Focus on getting your gift to the world and everything else will fall into place.

Focus on What’s important
Have you set priorities yet in your life. Only you can do this. Let the main thing be the main thing. Affirm each day to stay with what God has placed in your heart to do.
1 Timothy 4:14 says, “Do Not Neglect Your Gift”.

The constant challenge for entrepreneurs is to maintain balance in life. Some say, “there’s no such thing as balance if you want to be successful because a business requires all you got and then some. My experience has taught me that to be successful you must find balance in your personal and business life or you will fail absolutely on so many levels. Can anybody relate to this. Let me hear your thoughts. Thanks for your comment. Watch for Part 2 next week.

Michael Jackson was clearly a soulful person. He had the mind, emotion, intellect and imagination of a genius — Genius inspired by God.

He was an unmatched creative force in the world. His music crossed all genres and barriers racially, economically and politically. He reached the hearts of the young, old, black or white, poor and the wealthy. Yet, he was flawed, as we all are.

As I think about Michael, I can’t help but think about how his life might have been different – had the unscrupulous doctors, pharmacists, and other legal drug pushers, who made a fortune off of him had said, “ enough is enough”, it’s time to get some help Michael! And, loved him enough to make him take A look At the Man in the Mirror.

In many cases, exposure, is the only thing that will drive us to our truth. The truth is the only thing that sets us free. Perhaps, Michael needed to be driven to take that look – to make that Change!

It’s true, no one can make another person do something they do not want to do. But as business people we must get pass the ‘profit motive’ and do what is right! We must take responsibility and make sure we do not become enablers to others who are weak and go beyond the ordinary to make a difference in the life of another human being!

Conscious entrepreneurs must never simply go along with the status quo. The status quo can be wrong – dead wrong. We must use our position; use our power to effect change. Now!

We all have some baggage folks! A past touched by discouragement, loss, setbacks, abandonment, betrayal and abuse of every kind, and disappointment in those whom we have placed our trust.

Helen Keller once said, character cannot be developed in peace and quiet — only through the experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.

If this is true, and I believe it is, then the only thing that determines how we come out of traumatic experiences and learn to Win is through our belief system and by framing a new attitude. An attitude to win, not inspite of the pain, but because of the pain.

We must determine to take that pain, no matter how difficult it is, and use the intensity of it and allow it to propel us toward our greatness.

I believe Michael Jackson used all of the intensity of his pain to push him to become one of the greatest performers the world has ever known. He demonstrated that he could rise above his past, yet he had no clear future to go into because of a weak spiritual foundation.

Michael just needed to believe in himself and understand who God was in his life.

I can’t help thinking how his results may have been different had he had a personal relationship with his Creator. He perhaps would have understood, that his gifts and talents were not meant to merely entertain men her on this earth, but to inspire men toward God in Heaven.

OMG What a testimony he would have had with his life. Judging from some of the interviews I’ve heard regarding Michael’s last days. He was searcing for truth. He consulted with a spiritual advisor. I can only hope that he settled the great issue of eternity before he crossed over. I believe he did.

Yes, Michael could walk on the moon and thrill our hearts, but even the King of Pop must meet the King of Kings one day and give an account of ‘what he did with the talents and gifts God entrusted to him’.

We all have that question to answer, don’t we!

As I am writing this letter, my heart is filled with warmth and love for Michael as though he were my own son. We all love you Michael Jackson and I hope you know that.

After being asked the same question several times, “Doesn’t speaking so freely about the spiritual side of my life, effect me in business?” I thought it was time I address it once and for all! The answer is, ‘Yes’ it effects me, but hopefully in a positive way. Those people who want to do business with someone with a strong sense of personal integrity and spiritual connection, will continue to do business with me and will continue to value my contribution, creativity, and experience I bring to the table. Those who resist change will obviously not support me. But, I can truly say, to my knowledge, that I have never lost an account nor an opportunity to serve others because of my beliefs.

Today, I want to examine the mindset of a conscious entrepreneur vs. an unconscious entrepreneur.

We are all lucky to live in a world where ordinary men can cast their nets and find fish in the never ending sea of opportunity. In no other country are the opportunities so great for the entrepreneural spirit to thrive. It is indeed, a good thing, to know that you can find a need and fill it through ingenuity and by any means necessary! That is the nature of our market economy. The profit motive is the motivating factor driving capitalism – always has been and always will be. The problem is, however, all too many corporations and small business owners are seeking fortunes at the detriment of the American people.

Predatory lending practices has created a shift in our economy and has left millions of Americans without a home to return to. Unscrupulous investment companies have obscunded with the life savings of senior citizens who worked all of their lives to ensure they would have a nest egg to fall back on at the end of line. And sadly, those that were supposed to be the watch dogs of the process — apparently needed a watch dog to make sure the lines were not crossed and the people were protected. But, they were not and the lines between the white collar crooks and the street criminals have become so blurred you could barely tell the difference between the two.

It appears that not one single time did it ever occur to any of these major players that the lives of the people were hanging in the balance. Not one time did anyone seem to care that they were out of bounds. The dis-association between our actions and the impact on the people we were supposed to serve has widened – all in the name of capitalism — has left the world in a miserable mess. Who said it was O.K. to produce and sell cigarettes and alcohol that kills people and destroys lives – all in the name of ‘profit’. Who said it was O.K for pharmaceuticals to develop medicines that kill people instead of heal them. It seems, no depth is too low to stoop, in order to achieve their dreams of wealth. Does anybody care? Is it purely a supply and demand consideration or is it greed? Like it or lump it, it is the way of our market economy.

Until recently, after all hell has broken loose on the planet, people seem to be more open to the notion of Conscious Entrepreneurs who defy convention in the way they operate their businesses. They were always here, but by and large kept silent for fear of reprisal. People had to make difficult decisions between expressing their spirituality and feeding their families. It was just easier to remain silent. But, with the explosion of corruption in high places, we are now stepping up to the plate and openly declaring war on the insanity that is wrecking our world. The tide seems to be shifting now.

Conscious Entrepreneurs are leading the way — unabashed in their efforts to integrate spiritual elements of their lives into their business practices. These are the businesses who put ‘Heart and Soul’ into every business decision. [“The Heart and Soul of Business: One Woman’s Journey”. www.amazon.com] Conscious Entrepreneurs create businesses that allow them to be who they are, rather than fitting into a cookie cutter modality. They have the mindset that their businesses are an expression of who God is in their lives. They don’t model the world in the way that they run businesses. For example, the total focus is not on competition but on their uniqueness, collaboration and partnering. Compromising ones values in order to “Win” is unacceptable.

We [me included] don’t feel a compunction to be like everybody else but brand ourselves based on our unique gifting and talents. We find our own voice and our niche. In whatever capacity we are engaged, we are sensitive to the effect of what we do and how it affects the lives of others. The suffering of mankind in any form pricks our consciousness and presents an opportunity for us to be creative in using our talents to find solutions and to make a difference in the world.

We are driven by a desire to be of service to others, rather than being driven by the profit motive. We believe that if we do what we love — the money will come! We are more passionate, patient, purposeful and selective about the type of business we run and how we treat people– because of a sense of spiritual connection with an omnipotent and omni-present God.

This does not mean that we take the aspect of making money lightly because we realize that making money is necessary in order to make significant changes in the world. We become astute money managers because we take our businesses seriously because of who we are and who we represent. We become accountable to ourselves and a community of other believers.

Instead of seeking money to squander on material possessions and self engrandizement, we take care of our families first and gladly use any ‘profit’ to reinvest in their lives and the betterment of community. We view the opportunity to give back as a divine responsibility and privilege.

From this article, it is easy to see that the mindset of Conscious Entrepreneurs are quite different from Unconscious Entrepreneurs in many ways and yields totally different results. Which one are you?

Nothing in this article should be taken as an indictment against anyone who does not share my views. Please feel free to leave your comments.

Two years ago I set a goal to branch into personal development as a professional speaker and coach to deepen my focus on empowering women. I determined that this would be a natural fit for me as an writer of Christian books. Yesterday, I was reminded that we lay our plans and God steps in to interrupt them to carry us to our destiny.

Being paid large fees to keynote events for women as well as hosting my own brand of seminars and conferences is of course a part of my million dollar business strategy. But on yesterday, God opened an opportunity for me to be in a specific place at a specific time to intercept a call from a woman who was so depressed she was on the verge of committing suicide. She said, “I am looking for a reason to go on”. Stunned by the voice on the other end of the line, I knew this would be an uphill battle. As I listened to her story, I realized she believed she had plenty of reasons to want to die — she just needed one to give her a reason to live. I had to get my bearings and step into a place that God designed for me before the day had ever begun. This would prove to be a challenge beyond the typical seminar or coaching situation – this would be a life or death encounter on the other end of a telephone.

It was a place that God had already prepared for me. It was an experience that God would use to rush me toward my destiny. Everything I needed to know to take charge of the situation was already in place. My own experience would qualify me to nurture this hurting soul. As I transitioned in my role, I knew I had just one shot. I knew I had to trust and follow God’s lead. It was like a giant chess game, but this time I was negotiating a life. This blog is a testament to the power of God.

I don’t get a chance to bill my client for this one. But I do get the chance to be in gratitude for allowing God to use me — for orchestrating the events that led me to be where I was on yesterday that saved a woman’s life. You won’t find this one in your business plan because it was a case study of mammouth proportion. And, had I not been flexible enough and willing to go where he was leading at this hour, a woman may well have lost her life! My mission statement was definitely taken to task here. This woman needed inspiration for living. She needed the kind words and comfort of another human being who cared. I had to call upon everything I knew to reach her, and by the time we ended the conversation she had been transformed from hopeless to powerful! She came to understand who she really is and what potential she has to bring to the world. In the end she was thanking me so profusely, when it was I, who should have been thanking her because she represented a test in my life which stretched my character and forced me to grow.

Fellow entrepreneurs, tests and trials come not to make us stumble, but to catapult us to fulfill our destiny. Let me hear your thoughts.
